WASTE AND PARANOIA: GREEN PARTY OF ALBERTA
ASSESS UCP ATTACK ON ENVIROMENTAL ADVOCATES
EDMONTON – The move by the UCP to construct a “war room” to vilify those who question the ongoing expansion of the oilsands in the midst of a Climate Emergency is a manifestation of a waste of precious financial resources coupled with extreme political paranoia, say the Green Party of Alberta.
GPA Leader Cheryle Chagnon-Greyeyes indicates that the war room’s $30-million price tag is “ridiculously wasteful at a time when the UCP are depriving Albertans of basic public services. This is a publicity stunt that reveals our provincial government is in a state of full-fledged climate-crisis denial. We could be using that money to transition away from fossil fuels instead of mindless witch-hunts.”
The UCP government is also spending $2.5 on a public inquiry that will be led by accountant Steve Allan. The expressed aim of the inquiry is to expose “foreign-funded” entities that support an “anti-Alberta” position on the oil and gas sector.
Sandy Aberdeen, Green Party of Alberta Shadow Cabinet Critic for Climate Change, says the idea that foreigners are out to derail the Alberta economy smacks of paranoia and hypocrisy. “Until recently, the American billionaire Koch brothers, David and Charles, were the biggest foreign lease owners in Alberta’s oilsands. Who do you think would have more to spend? Koch billionaires or environmentalists reliant on donations?”
The Greens believe the inquiry is an outright threat, intended to intimidate those in Alberta who disagree with climate change deniers. Says Chagnon-Greyeyes. “This is little more than a type of show trial that is meant to beat down opposition to continued adherence to a sunset industry. We know Albertans want a future for their children that includes a clean, green economy, and we are not going to surrender to this tactic.”
Aberdeen states that the emergence of the war room could not possibly be any more ill-timed, given the Climate Emergency that is unfolding within Canada and globally. “A war room is a waste of taxpayer dollars and resources. We are being taken backwards, no renewable energy transition or fossil fuel exit strategy is being discussed. We have been repeatedly warned by the best scientific sources. We must move away from fossil fuels as soon as possible. The war room exemplifies a lack of effective leadership.”
