LARRY SIMPSON TO SPEAK AT GREEN PARTY

OF ALBERTA POLICY CONVENTION

EDMONTON – The Green Party of Alberta are pleased to announce that Larry Simpson, Associate Regional Vice-President of the Nature Conservatory of Canada, will be speaking at the 2019 Green Party of Alberta Policy Convention in Edmonton on September 14, 2019.

Simpson’s talk will focus on ecological realities, a short history of the West, followed by time spent on land use issues and policies in Alberta and Western Canada.

Raised on a farm in south west Alberta, Simpson obtained his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta in 1979. Prior to joining NCC he worked in the oil and gas sector with Amoco Canada Petroleum Limited.

In 1988 he acted as Chair of “Wildlife Running into the Future”, a conference at the University of Calgary about the future of wildlife conservation in North America.

He joined the Nature Conservancy of Canada in May, 1990 as Western Regional Director. During his tenure with the Nature Conservancy of Canada over 7,000,000 acres has been conserved and over $1 billion in cash and land value has been raised to advance conservation.

He worked with the Federal government to help develop tax law which would appropriately recognize and incent landowners who choose to donate land or rights to land in the case of conservation easements.

Simpson also worked with the Province of Alberta and other provinces of western Canada to encourage the creation of conservation easement legislation which allows a landowner to donate conservation friendly restrictions on their land while still maintaining ownership. Thus, adding and tool that can be used to conserve working lands throughout the settled area of Canada.

Simpson specializes in working with people who are interested in conserving health natural systems so that they will also sustain healthy communities, healthy businesses and healthy families.  Helping landowners conserve the working lands they love is a particular passion for him.

In 2012 the Emerald Awards Foundation recognized Simpson for his extraordinary commitment to conservation.

In 2015 Venture magazine listed Simpson as one of the top 50 most influential people in Alberta, something usually reserved for people who excel in business or community work.

The 2019 Green Party of Alberta Policy Convention will be held at the Greenfield Community League, situated at 3803-114 Street NW, Edmonton. The doors open at 9 am with the event itself starting at 9:30 am.
