GUARANTEED ANNUAL INCOME WILL INCREASE DIGNITY FOR ALL, SAY GREENS
CALGARY – The Green Party of Alberta is calling for the implementation of a Guaranteed Annual Income (GAI) to address the growing economic inequality in Alberta. All Albertans are impacted by poverty through less vibrant and inclusive communities, higher costs for health care and the justice system, homelessness, and lost economic opportunity.
Green Party Leader Cheryle Chagnon-Greyeyes says, “The Green Party of Alberta supports implementing a Guaranteed Annual Income because it helps people out of poverty, and inter-generational poverty is something we must face. The solution is simple: eliminate poverty by giving people money.”
Greyeyes, who is the party’s candidate in the riding of Calgary – Varsity, indicates, “The GAI will be funded by increased taxes on higher incomes and the significant savings it creates by reducing bureaucracy and service duplication, lowering criminal justice expenses, and tackling poverty-related health care.” Significantly, the number one social determinant of health is poverty; eliminate poverty and reduce the burden on the health-care system.
This program would effectively eliminate many of the current bureaucratic, highly administrative interventions, their ineffectiveness exceeded only by the humiliation they perpetuate. It should be noted that the GAI has support from the mayors of Calgary and Edmonton.
The current election is an opportunity for Albertans to seize the moment according to Greyeyes. “The Guaranteed Annual Income Program ensures that everyone can live with dignity, and the Green Party of Alberta supports it as an idea whose time has come.”
