GREEN PARTY OF ALBERTA SUPPORTS PRO-CHOICE
EDMONTON – The Green Party of Alberta fully supports pro-choice legislation and condemns any restrictions placed on current legislation regarding women’s rights.
Recently, 12 Conservative MPs marched in an anti-abortion rally on Parliament Hill, exposing an apparent eagerness to re-ignite the abortion debate throughout the nation. Alberta’s Premier, Jason Kenney, said in February of this year the UCP won’t alter legislation: “I’ve been clear about that for two and a half years. A United Conservative government will not address this issue, will not engage in this debate, will not initiate legislation.” Federal Conservative leader Andrew Sheer recently stated “a Conservative government will not re-open this debate.” The Green Party of Alberta will hold them to this, along with all politicians across Canada.
The Green Party of Alberta acknowledges the dangers that anti-abortion laws can bring, especially in terms of women seeking termination through precarious and sometimes deadly means. Party leader Cheryle Chagnon-Greyeyes says, “As per the Green Party of Alberta party policies, we support a preventative approach to healthcare, including proper education; advocate for proper funding to remove barriers, such as access to facilities, transportation, childcare and other support services. We want to improve mental health care, recognizing that mental health services and facilities in the province have long been inadequate and that Albertans have a right to much better, that is, to as good mental health care as our society can collectively afford; and ensure that there are a sufficient number of appropriately trained and licensed mental-health specialists in Alberta to meet the needs of Albertans, especially those considering or who have chosen to terminate a pregnancy.”
According to Vision Green, the Green Party of Canada’s platform: “Green MPs will oppose any possible government move to diminish the right of a woman to a safe, legal abortion. We fully support a woman’s right to choose. We will also expand programs in reproductive rights and education to avoid unwanted pregnancies and expand supports for low-income mothers.” Green Party of Canada leader Elizabeth May reaffirmed: “I am unequivocal in my support of a woman’s right to a safe & legal abortion. In 2019 the only person who should be making decisions about what happens with a woman’s body is that woman. The Green Party of Canada have always stood for the right to choose and we will continue to do so.”
The Green Party of Alberta wants to collectively discourage the resurgence of a pro-choice vs pro-life debate, by improving education and health services, and by minimizing provocateurs, recognizing misinformation when we see it and disregarding it.
