GREEN PARTY OF ALBERTA: SCIENCE PROVES CLIMATE ACTION NEEDED NOW
CALGARY – This province’s Green Party is calling for action to be taken now on Climate Change. Canada is warming up twice as fast as the rest of the world, and it’s “effectively irreversible,”1 warned 43 federal and university-based scientists in an April 1, 2019, report.
The report indicates warming is happening faster in the winter season, with a 3.3 degrees Celsius average temperature increase between December and February. Southern Canadians get more winter rain; northern Canadians have melting permafrost and less sea ice. More rain and less snow impact the availability of fresh water, particularly in the summer. The report also states that worse case scenario, Canada will see 10 times the deadly heat waves and double the number of extreme rainstorms.
By 2030, the federal government aimed to cut carbon-dioxide emissions by 200 million tonnes implementing policies like the carbon tax, phasing out coal power, investing in public transit, green energy and building energy efficiencies. Meanwhile in Alberta, the NDP has allowed oil sands C02 emissions to increase from 75 up to 100 mega tonnes per year, effectively negating the Federal initiative and the goals of the Canadian-signed Paris Agreement. The Green Party of Alberta expects the UCP would allow the threat to grow even larger.
Is this what Albertans want?
Cheryle Chagnon-Greyeyes, Leader of the Green Party of Alberta and the party’s candidate in Calgary – Varsity, says, “Climate issues effect the economy, environment, healthcare and so on, impacting our families, our communities, and our future. The Green Party of Alberta would introduce an Environmental Bill of Rights to ensure Albertans have clean air, clean water, healthy food, healthy environment. We have 32 strong Green candidates. Bring the Green voice into the Legislature and demand change by voting Green Party this election.”
Albertans have the choice: to continue with the backward policies that put our children and the planet at risk, or to vote for the Green Party of Alberta and work to do our part, demand change – your vote can make a difference. We need a vision beyond tomorrow, and we can embrace the fastest growing economy – the green economy.
