CHERYLE CHAGNON-GREYEYES AND WILL CARNEGIE TO SPEAK AT GREEN PARTY OF ALBERTA POLICY CONVENTION
EDMONTON – Former Leader Cheryle Chagnon-Greyeyes and soon to be Interim Leader Will Carnegie will be addressing the 2019 Green Party of Alberta Policy Convention in Edmonton on Saturday, September 14, 2019.
Chagnon-Greyeyes, who recently stepped down as Green Party Leader, was elected to the position at a leadership convention in Red Deer in September of 2018. She received over 71% of votes from Green Party members. In doing so, she became the first Indigenous woman in Canada to win the leadership of a provincial political party. She is also the party’s Candidate of Record in the constituency of Calgary-Varsity.
She has worked at the University of Calgary and is Cree from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation. Chagnon-Greyeyes has been marching, singing, drumming and speaking at marches and rallies throughout Calgary for the past few years, bringing attention to the issues of Murdered & Missing Indigenous Women & Girls (MMIWG), Calgary Women’s March, Sisters in Spirit Rally & March, Valentine’s Memorial March, and for other social justice, climate/environmental, Indigenous and human rights issues.
Carnegie, whose appointment as Interim Leader begins on September 30, started his political engagement at a young age, first working in his Alderman’s office at the age of fifteen as a summer intern. He has carried that engagement through his life and later began volunteering with various community organizations, organizing community events, assisting in political campaigns and serving as the President of the Forest Lawn Community Association.
In the spring of 2019, Carnegie ran for political office the Green Party of Alberta’s candidate in the riding of Calgary. He currently chairs the Community Action Team of a local not-for-profit with a focus on safety and is a member of a Community Grants Committee in Greater Forest Lawn.
The 2019 Green Party of Alberta Policy Convention will be held at the Greenfield Community League, situated at 3803-114 Street NW, Edmonton. The doors open at 9 am with the event itself starting at 9:30 am.
