ALBERTA NEEDS STRONG GREEN VOICES NOW
CALGARY – Last Friday 1.4 million youth worldwide, including more than 200,000 in Canada, went on strike to demand government action on the climate crisis. Meanwhile the NDP and the Conservatives continue to serve the interests of oil and gas corporations.
Cheryle Chagnon-Greyeyes, the leader of the Green Party of Alberta and the party’s candidate in Calgary – Varsity, says Alberta’s youth recognize the need for change. “As evidenced by the massive student support for the International Youth Climate Strike on March 15, a strong green voice is coming from young Albertans. We need to heed their call and act now,” Chagnon-Greyeyes said.
Chagnon-Greyeyes said Albertans voted for the NDP in 2015 hoping to see a greener direction. That did not happen. “We see legislation led by corporate interests rather than people interests,” she said. “We have seen no preparation for shifting Alberta’s economy to one that’s aligned with the international movement for breathable air, clean water and healthy soil. The current government can’t keep their blinders on and the Conservatives cannot keep breaking all the rules and reversing protections for a livable future.”
Green Party of Alberta related policies:
– Electoral inclusion for young people in their future; they demand it. Lower the voting age to 16;
– Give all Albertans the rights to clean water, air, and soil, and the ability to hold the government accountable by introducing an Environmental Bill of Rights;
– Support Alberta with a guaranteed income. This frees up healthcare resources, improves access for all Albertans and saves on overall healthcare costs. Benefits are critical for seniors and children’
– Take steps to engage in GROWING industries, and cut subsidies to the soon to be redundant oil and gas industry. Engage the world’s largest rising economy: the green economy.
Chagnon-Greyeyes calls on all Albertans to vote Green on April 16 and to join in solidarity with youth around the world on Fridays at noon as they call for immediate action on the world’s climate emergency.
