ALBERTA GREENS APPLAUD ELECTORAL
GAINS BY GREEN PARTY OF CANADA
EDMONTON – Electoral gains by the Green Party of Canada signal an encouraging shift in voter preference say the Green Party of Alberta.
The Green Party vote was 6.5% in the 43rd Canadian federal general election, up 3.1% from the 3.4% received in 2015. The Greens also increased their parliamentary caucus from two to three. In Alberta, the federal Greens achieved 2.8% of the popular vote, a modest increase of .3% from the previous electoral cycle.
GPA Interim Leader Will Carnegie says the increased support for the Greens both across the country and in Alberta is an indication things are going in the right direction. “We’re pleased to see the upward trajectory and believe this is the beginning of great things to come. More than 57,000 Albertans decided to act on the Climate Emergency and vote for a Universal Basic Income. That’s up roughly 8000 from four years ago.”
“This means that our policies are starting to get traction, although we recognize we have much to do to keep gaining the faith and trust of Albertans in the coming months and years,” says Carnegie, who was also the Green Party of Canada Candidate in the riding of Calgary-Forest Lawn.
The Green Party of Alberta wishes to thank the 34 federal candidates and their dedicated volunteer teams for contributing to the vitality of democratic life in the province.
“The dominant issues of our time have not conveniently evaporated. The Climate Emergency, the growing social and economic displacement, and the need to move to a clean, green economy are still before us,” says Carnegie.
“We encourage Albertans to take out memberships, volunteer, and donate to the Green Party of Alberta so that our communities have a sustainable and socially just voice in our province’s legislature. We’re grateful for the electoral steps forward and are planning to make further strides at the provincial level thanks to your help,” says Carnegie, whose appointment as Interim Leader of the Green Party of Alberta began in September.
