Severe weather isn’t hard to find

Leader Janet Keeping’s letter to the editor of the Calgary Herald, September 14:

Re  “Connecting the dots between NDP’s coal phase-out plan and hurricanes”:

I was pleased to see Graham Thomson’s column on the connection between the burning of coal for electricity and the severe weather to which climate change is a significant contributor.  Thomson points out that “all politics is local.”  Agreed.  But then it would have been helpful if he had used this summer’s ferocious wildfires in western Canada as an example, rather than hurricanes in the distant Caribbean and US southeast.

As I write, wildfires are threatening the townsite in Waterton National Park and several towns in the area are under evacuation orders.  Only a year ago, Fort McMurray was devastated by fire.

Climate change is already impacting us locally.  Elected officials have to respond more vigorously than they have to date.

Out-going leader, Green Party of Alberta
