GREEN PARTY LEADER TO RUN IN CALGARY – FOOTHILLS
CALGARY – Janet Keeping, Leader of the Green Party of Alberta, will run as a candidate in the forthcoming provincial by-election in Calgary – Foothills. The seat has been vacant since former Progressive Conservative Premier Jim Prentice resigned on the evening of May 5, 2015, when his party was defeated.
“This by-election gives citizens in Calgary – Foothills a chance to lead the province by electing a Green Party voice to the legislature. People have said that they are seeking someone who is both experienced and trustworthy. I promise that I’ll hold the government to account with intelligent opposition,” says Keeping, who was elected Green Party Leader in September 2012.
Among the key issues that the Greens will be focusing on are: diversification of Alberta’s economy and developing sustainable communities that include local businesses, schools close to homes, libraries, day-care centres, convenient public transit and community gardens. In Keeping’s words: “It is shocking that entire communities lack these basic amenities and services. The people of Calgary – Foothills deserve an MLA who will advocate for the provision of these services and amenities on an urgent basis. As things stand, in many parts of Calgary – Foothills, residents are being treated shabbily, as second class citizens.”
“We’ve been out recently in the community talking to people at the doorstep. Based on feedback to date, we can say that people are hungry for a reasoned and principled opposition voice, now that we have had a change in the provincial government,” says Keeping, a former co-founder and Executive Director of the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre and Past-President and CEO of the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership. The riding of Calgary – Foothills will be a focal point for Green Party supporters across the province. Keeping says offers of assistance for the forthcoming campaign have been pouring in. “This will be a pan-Alberta campaign because people see the need to have the Green Party represented in the Legislature.”
